HardBall

Well its recession and jobs have dried up. In India officially its a slowdown and the Jobs have dried up.

Somebody just turned off the tap. In this scenario I opened another office in Pune :-). And now I am desperately trying to add clients especially Pune based.

Since recruiting clients are difficult to come by the ones who are actually recruiting are in a position to negotiate the hell out of the recruiters.

In such an instance I agreed as a one off case at an extremely low rate since he offered many positions.

Well now I think he is using my rates to lowball someone else. And is refusing to share the mandates with me.

Should I tell him that these rates are valid only if we get positions right away.

Maybe I should..

interview tips – 1

job-interview-cartoon
Starting today over the next few days I am bring here a string of Interviewing tips directed towards the Job seeker.

These are tips and can be taken one at a time or if you are planning an all out change in your interview startegy – can be taken together. But, the idea is that whatever tip you decide to use execute it in line with your overall interviewing startegy – if you have one.

“Interview strategy” is nothing but a thought process to prepare your response to the questions thrown at you by the interviewer.

Lets get down to business.

First the basics:

1. Reach at least 10 minutes ahead of the slated time of Interview.

2. Dress formally. That would mean any suitably formal attire. Dawn  Mackay has a good post on how to Dress.

Coming to the actual Interview session – you need to be prepared to tackle the questions. Typically this would begin with Why? & What? .

Why you want to apply for this Job ? &

What do know about our  company?

Well both will require some study and research. Study the company website , if possible speak to people who work there. try to gather as much information about the prospective employer from the recruiter.

The same works with the Job Specs. Get the specks clarified and find out how your skill sets and experience relate to the Job responsibilities.

Once you have decided on your response practice , either in front of a mirror or with friend. Practice makes one perfect you see.

Prepare a one minute biography of yourself. this would help you start quickly off  – to the question – tell us something about yourself.

this escalotor pitch needs to be modified suitably modified to the Job requirments.

Put a Fence

Guard your turf
Guard your turf

While going through the linkedin Q&A section came across an inetersting and very relevant question. How should one tackle the current scenario where most existing clients are not giving Business. Well the options were :

1. Should one go for aggressive Business Development

or

2. Does one guard the existing A list clients ( Put a Fence) by interacting with them more closely and ensuring that the turf is not encroached.

Well the answer was equally appealing.

Possibly devote equal time to doing both. Spend a Good 50% Quality time meeting all your existing clients. Chip in any way possible without being a pain and devote the rest to doing some aggrssive Business development.

Now off to execute.

Thou Shalt Not Touch

Mr NRN has this uncanny knack of putting his foot in the mouth.

Recently it was his statement regarding Satyam employees.details here .

He has such a great following and people hold him in such high esteem why come up with such needless statements.

One recalls his gaffe about the National anthem few months back.

Perhaps this was a senior moment. Considering he has done so much good – I guess these statements will be soon forgotten by people.

Hopefully.

Block Closure

Today a New Word was added to my vocabulary – block closure. After a couple of wrong hits managed to get it right with this news item – which mentions Tata going for the 4th Closure of the year.

Still not guessed it – well its what all the automotive firms are doing now going for weeklong shutdowns to compensate for the lack of Demand or excess inventory.

Tatas are not the only people who going for “Block Closure” almost every Auto motive firm worth its salt is going for it. That is the Buzzword in the industry. Pricol, SKF, Conti, Delphi you name it.

Lets hope the Indian Engineering sector gets off the Block soon.
