Learning to stay Motivated

This topic came to me as i found it difficult to keep my eyes open as i sat this afternoon preparing a presentation. No, it is not easy to stay motivated. Most of us are prone to this energy sapping malady – loss of motivation.

So here are a few tips to overcome the same and Get Motivated –

Understand What makes you feel Bored

Knowing what makes you feel bored and preparing yourself accordingly can help you in staying motivated. At office there will be certain tasks that just are not your cup of tea and they have to be done. So what do you do. do them the first thing in the morning and get it over with. Or keep 10 minutes every hour to do a slice of the boring task. that way you could continuously be chipping away at your boring list and get motivated – knowing that you have accomplished something .

Laugh More Often

Simple. Just Laugh. Read comics, Jokes . Talk to people and share them. Laughing is an uplifting experience and has a positive effect on your body releasing toxins and providing stress relief.

Keep a log of you breakthroughs

Do you remember when you had the first major success of your life? No? I thought so. We tend to overlook this simple habit of writing down our feelings every time we have a major breakthrough in our lives. If you want the shortest path to motivation, just keep a log of your successes. And get inspired by it.

Exercise

Exercise is the easiest way to get motivated. A simple 15 minute walk can get the endorphins flowing in your body.

Create a Great Environment

Personalize your space and make it yours. Let it have your signature style. Make changes , adjust , improve . Whatever the space you work in, make it yours somehow , your ownership increases and you will feel proud and motivated to work in that environment.

Read Success Stories

Read success stories . Books of Sudha Murthy, Capt Gopinath, Subroto Bagchi, JRD Tata. Read their stories and Biographies. Watch motivating talks – you can download great stuff from YouTube. Listen to motivating Audio tapes. Take time to listen , watch Read these books. allocate time for it daily. As Ziglar says – we take bath and clean our body daily , but we don’t take effort to put clean thoughts into our mind – every day.

Monitor your Progress

If you work constantly you will make some progress, that’s a rule. You may have the impression that you’re not going anywhere but that’s because you’re skipping all those little milestones you go through every day. Watching back with satisfaction at what you created will surely boost your energy.

Write Clear Goals

Writing down clear simple goals and breaking them down to daily tasks makes achieving your goals easier and energizes you. I am most energized when i am achieving Goals. And your daily goals need not be big. they will be 1/30th of the Goals you have st for the month. Congratulate yourself when you achieve these small milestones. this feeds your motivation.

Talk about your Projects

Discuss your work with people in your family , your friends outside of your work. Lt them know what you have done , what you have achieved. Talking about your projects and achievements – reinforces to that you are actually accomplishing things and will help to move you forward.

Reward yourself

This is a key aspect which many do not take seriously. It is important to reward yourself for the accomplishments – even the smaller milestones. That reinforces the fact that you are crossing milestones and helps you in feeling fulfilled.

Don’t Fall into the Productivity Trap

It is what you do that matters. Not how much you do. This is one trap which I regularly fall into – getting carried away by the high of being able to tick of the tasks accomplished. Many times we fail to see if what we have done takes us in the direction of our Goals.

Do one Thing at a Time

Doing 2-3 things parallelly does’nt work. It infact drains you mentally and physically. Multi tasking is a myth. Do one thing even a small fragment. Finish it and then move on to the next. Listening to Music while doing your work – does fall in to multitasking category. Though watching a movie – would.

Mingle with Positive People

Look for positive people around you and mingle with them. their positive attitude will rub off on you. Leaving you motivated. Children are very positive. Spending time with them can leave with a lot of surplus energy to go through the day. But if you don’t want to let your self go and be like a child with them – it might actually sap your energy.
