Why Set Goals?

When it comes to setting goals most of us are in the same boat. I can say that with conviction because as Brian Tracy mentions – 97 % of the people donot have goals. And out of the small percentage that has goals an overwhelmingly small percentage write them down.

Both these facts are crucial to extracting some advantage out of the goal setting process.

How to set goals ?

to start with decide on what you want. Thats a simple suggestion but actually it is pretty difficult.  I have tried it a few times and have failed.  I get carried away by the latest fad , the  advertisement for a Bugatti Weyron,  or a trip to an exotic destination. then after a month or so I realise I have no such real interest. It was just a momentary urge. Best way to get around this is to not to limit your wants.

There might be many things that you would want to have and achieve. Try to write all of them down. Keep writing , jotting down every small thing that catches your fancy. And keep adding to that list.  Give a break for a day or two or even a week. And now give the list ratings of A, B, C . A for things you want right now , cant live without , B – Things which you are willing to wait for and dont mind having sometime later in life , and C for things you would like to have but are not quite sure or as keen lets say as A and B.

Now the A list is The List that you need to keep in your pocket and take it around you everywhere.

Q- How do you eat an Elephant?
A- Bit by bit.
You get the drift. You need to really break down your goals to really really small chunks that can fit into your day or max a Week. And give yourself time frames for completing these chunks. This I tell you is easier said than done. Breaking down the bigger Goals to smaller achievable chunks is a huge process – that needs to be undertaken upfront. Else you will get disheartened and give up.
Break it down to small “eatable” chunks – stuff that you can finish in a couple of hours or in a day. The confidence that it gives and the satisfaction of completing something will help you taking bolder steps towards your Goal as you moveon.
Write Them down
this is crucial. Write them down and stick up copies at places like your bathroom mirror, your wardrobe , laptop or a small copy in your purse.
These are the minimum stuff you need to be able to do to reach your goals.
And let me add that goal setting is a continuous process. There will be setbacks there will be goals which you find difficult moving forward – then you need to re-look , re strategize ask for help or advice. or add or remove steps.
